A Good Man Is Hard to Find Summary

“A Good Man Is Hard to Find” is a Southern gothic short storey written by Flannery O’Connor in 1953. She called it “the storey of a family of six that gets killed by an escaped convict who calls himself the Misfit.”

A serial killer, who is disturbed by the suffering of people and himself because of what he thinks are unfair laws in both the secular world and God’s, and an old-fashioned Southern lady dressed as a superficial, mischievous, morally-flawed Methodist grandmother talk about what they think. The storey is still the most anthologized and well-known of all of O’Connor’s work even though the ending is mysterious. She stumbles into a way that makes The Misfit question what he is doing just before he kills her. In pity for his pain, she shows that all good Christian mothers, like God, love all of God’s children no matter what they do.

If you want to know why it’s hard to find a good man, this storey is for you. It’s a dark comedy in which only a serial killer can figure out why it’s so hard to find one. As a moral storey, the work talks about infidelity in marriage, religious faith, and the power of revival. The title of the storey is the Eddie Green song. Also, it’s a moral storey about a car accident that could have been avoided and a self-righteous killer who preaches apostasy. He shows that he knows more than he lets on. “A Time for Everything” is the poem that starts the third chapter of the Book of Ecclesiastes. It alludes to the death that Qoheleth said would happen to everyone in Ecclesiastes 12:1: “evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, ‘I have no pleasure in them’.” The weary mass murderer seems to know that he will one day be caught by the authorities and be executed. This “eye for an eye” punishment fits with his own idea of what is fair. This is how he would know that his rebellion is a waste of time, because the man would have read Ecclesiastes. The author of the book, who claimed to be King Solomon, wrote an aphorism about this in Ecclesiastes 10:8:
