A Long Walk to Water opens with two tales, delivered in alternating portions, about two eleven-year-old Sudanese girls, one in 2008 and one in 1985. Nya, the girl, gets water from a pond two hours’ walk from her house; she visits the pond twice a day. Salva, the kid, becomes one of Sudan’s “lost boys,” a group of migrants who travel across the African continent on foot in search of their relatives and a safe place to remain. Salva is a survivor, having survived everything from loneliness to attacks by armed rebels to encounters with dangerous lions and crocodiles. His narrative eventually intersects with Nya’s in an unexpected and touching manner. It includes an afterword by author Linda Sue Park and the real-life Salva Dut, who inspired the storey and founded Water for South Sudan.

Salva Dut

During the civil conflict in what is now South Sudan, Salva Dut was separated from his family. He is forced to trek for weeks in the hope of reuniting with his family. Salva also tries to obtain food and water while dodging rebels, lions, and other dangers. Salva leads a group of 1,500 lost youths to a refugee camp near the Gilo River. Many others die along the road, including his uncle and some of his pals. He lands in America seven years later. He resides in Rochester, New York, with his family. Years later, he locates his father, who informs him that the majority of his family survived. Salva, upon hearing this, establishes “Water for South Sudan,” a volunteer organisation dedicated to the construction of wells in South Sudan. He assists others in South Sudan who are in need of clean water.

Nya

an 11-year-old girl, treks for eight hours to get water from a pond. In 2008, she and her family moved to South Sudan. Her family’s house is a long distance from the closest pond, where she treks twice a day to assist her parents and younger sister, Akeer. She also has a younger brother who is cared for at home by her mother. Throughout the novel, her sister, Akeer, becomes ill and is informed that the water has been poisoned. Later in 2009, a well was installed in her hamlet, allowing her to avoid walking so far and drinking contaminated water. Nya is happy when a school is erected by the well. She then identifies herself as Salva Dut at the conclusion of the book because she was perplexed that Salva, a Dinka, would assist her Nuer community.
