“Goldilocks and the Three Bears” (originally titled “The Story of the Three Bears”) is a three-part 19th-century British fairy tale. The original version of the storey talks about a rude old lady who breaks into the woodland house of three bachelor bears while they are abroad. She sits in their seats, eats part of their soup, falls asleep in one of their beds, and destroys one of their chairs. When the bears find her, she wakes up, climbs out the window, and is never seen again. The elderly lady was replaced by a young girl called Goldilocks in the second iteration, and the original bear trio were replaced by Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear in the third and most well-known form (who is not actually an infant, but rather a small cub).

What began as a terrifying oral tale evolved into a nice family narrative with barely a tinge of danger. The narrative has spawned several interpretations and has been adapted for cinema, opera, and other forms of media. “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” is one of the most well-known fairy tales in English.

Plot

Illustration from the second edition of “The Story of the Three Bears,” published in 1839 by W. N. Wright of 60 Pall Mall, London.

In Robert Southey’s rendition of the story, three anthropomorphic bears—”a tiny, little, teeny bear, a middle-sized bear, and a big, gigantic bear”—dwell together in a home in the woods in Robert Southey’s rendition of the storey. Southey defines them as kind, trustworthy, harmless, neat, and welcoming. These “bachelor” bears each get their own porridge bowl, chair, and bed. They cook porridge for breakfast one day, but it is too hot to eat, so they go for a stroll in the woods while their porridge cools. An elderly lady approaches the bears’ home. Her family has sent her away since she is a shame to them. She is arrogant, bad, foul-mouthed, ugly, filthy, and a vagabond who deserves a stay in the House of Correction. She peers through a window, peeks through the keyhole, and pulls on the latch. She steps in, certain that no one is at home. The elderly lady eats Wee Bear’s oatmeal before settling on his chair and breaking it. While prowling about, she discovers the bears’ beds and falls asleep in Wee Bear’s. When the bears return, the storey comes to an end. Wee Bear discovers his empty bowl, broken chair, and an elderly lady sleeping in his bed and exclaims, “Someone has been lying in my bed, and here she is!” The elderly lady awakens, leaps out the window, and is never seen again.
