Hills like White Elephants Summary
In the early 1920s, an American man and a young woman were waiting for the fast train to Madrid at a Spanish railway station. In the sweltering shade, they chug beers, two licorice-flavored anis cocktails, and a last round of beer while talking about the girl’s upcoming “minor procedure,” according to the American guy.
Almost as hot as the Spanish sun, the tension between them is palpable. The man repeatedly tells the girl that he doesn’t want her to get the procedure if she doesn’t want to. However, it is obvious that he expects her to comply. The young lady is making an attempt to appear brave and unconcerned, but her fear of undergoing the surgery is evident. She tries to win him over with a fantastic figure of speech about the hills outside the train station “looking like white elephants,” but he is irritated by her ruse. He keeps going on and on about the procedure and how he believes it is “natural” and “not really an operation at all.”
The fast train finally comes, and the two prepare to board. Despite her appearance, the youngster says she’s “fine.” She’s trying to calm him down by lying and acquiescing to his demands. There is still no solution. As they prepare to travel to Madrid, there is still a lot of anxiety in the air. A procedure in Madrid is causing her great anxiety, and she is offended by the man’s dishonest, condescending empathy.
