Mary Oliver the Journey Summary

The tale of “The Journey” centres on a character who is, well, on a journey. They begin at a moment in their lives where they recognise it is time to let go of the things that no longer serve them and embark on a new journey. While the reader isn’t given a clear explanation as to where they’re headed, the author explains how they got there.

It’s easy to get terrible counsel, and it’s hard to find time for yourself when you’re always expected to help others around you. They’ve reached a point where they can’t go back. Moving on and letting go of the things in their lives that are holding them back is what they know they must do. The tale begins during the day, then shifts to nighttime as they draw closer to their planned destination.

The poem asks the reader to imagine themselves in the character’s shoes. This demonstrates the growth of their decision to remove negative portions of their lives in order to continue living without them throughout the daytime hours.

The poem concludes with the realisation that they must first and foremost take care of themselves. Because following the advice of others has failed, I’ve had to quit trying to improve other people’s lives. In only a few words, an essential narrative is being shared.

The Journey

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice —
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voice behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do —
determined to save
the only life that you could save.
