Night by Elie Wiesel Summary

During World War II, twelve-year-old Elie Wiesel spent a lot of time studying the Talmud and Jewish religious thought. His teacher, Moshe the Beadle, has just come back from a near-death experience, and he says that Nazis will soon try to ruin the peace of their lives. When anti-Semitic measures force the Sighet Jews to live in supervised ghettos, Elie’s family stays calm and agrees to live there. In the spring, authorities started sending trainloads of Jews to the Auschwitz-Birkenau complex by train. Elie’s family is in the last group of people. In a cattle car, eighty villagers can barely move and have to eat and drink very little. Madame Schächter, one of the deportees, goes into a panic when she sees flames and furnaces in her mind.

At midnight on the third day of their deportation, the group is shocked to see flames coming out of huge ovens and gags at the smell of burning flesh. Guards with billy clubs force Elie’s group to choose between those who can work and those who face a grim and improbable fate. Elie and his father, Chlomo, lie about their ages and go to Auschwitz, a concentration camp. They go there with other men who are brave enough. Elie’s mother and three sisters go to Birkenau, the death camp, but he doesn’t see them. After seeing infants burned alive in a fire pit, Elie rebels against God, who does not speak.

Every day, Elie and Chiomo try to stay healthy so they can stay in the work force. Sadistic guards and trustees give out punishments that aren’t always fair. They have to walk to Buna, a factory in the Auschwitz complex, after three weeks. There, they work in an electronics warehouse. This is when the guards hang a childlike thirteen-year-old. He dies slowly in front of Elie’s eyes.

Elie gets depressed during Rosh Hashanah services, and he gets gloomy. At the next selection, the doctor takes Chlomo out of the group of men who are better at what they do, like the doctor. Chlomo, on the other hand, passed a second physical exam and was given another chance to live. Elie has had surgery on his foot.

Because Russian forces were getting closer to the Nazi camp, SS troops left Buna in January of 1945. Over a forty-two mile stretch, the Wiesels and their fellow prisoners are forced to run through the night in bitter cold and snow. As Elie wraps strips of blanket around his bleeding foot to help it heal, Inmates who don’t do well are shot. Elie prays for strength so that he can save his father from death. They all pile up together at a makeshift barracks where they can stay for free. Three days later, the last of the prisoners are still alive, and they are still eating snow out of their mouths. They are on a ten-day train ride to Buchenwald, in central Germany. Finally, only the Wiesels and ten other people are still alive.

Elie tries to nurse his father back to health in wooden bunks. Dysentery, starvation, and a brutal beating take their toll on the man who is dying. Elie’s mind goes into a kind of haze. When he wakes up, Chlomo isn’t there. Elie thinks he was sent to the ovens while he was still alive. In Buchenwald, there is a lot of resistance. In April, American troops freed the camp. In the mirror, Elie looks at himself and sees a dead body. He is so weak from food poisoning that he can’t even stand to look at himself.
