Pride and Prejudice Summary
“It is a universal truth that a single man who has a lot of money needs a wife.” A lot of people think that’s what Mrs. Bennet thinks as she looks at the new Bingley, who she thinks will be a good husband for one of her daughters. At a party, Bingley is drawn to Jane, who is both beautiful and shy. Darcy and Elizabeth don’t get along very well when they meet. Even though Austen shows them to be interested in each other, she turns the convention of first impressions on its head. Elizabeth’s pride of rank and fortune and his prejudice against Elizabeth’s family’s social inferiority keep him away, while Elizabeth’s pride of self-respect and her prejudice against Darcy’s snobbery keep her away, too.
When Collins comes, he wants to marry one of the Bennet sisters. Mrs. Bennet leads him to Elizabeth, but she turns him down for marriage. Instead, he gets married to her friend, Charlotte. During this time, Elizabeth meets Wickham, who is very attractive. Darcy has refused to give him his inheritance, so he tells her that. They both like each other.
After Bingley abruptly leaves for London, Elizabeth’s dislike for Darcy grows because she thinks he is trying to stop Bingley and Jane from getting together. On the other hand, Darcy has become more and more fond of Elizabeth, and he admires her intelligence and energy. Elizabeth meets Darcy while visiting Charlotte, who is now married. Darcy tells Elizabeth that he loves her and proposes to her. Surprised by his offer, Elizabeth turns it down. When Darcy asks for an explanation, she accuses him of severing Jane from Bingley and depriving Wickham of his inheritance. Darcy then writes Elizabeth a letter in which he explains that he broke up the couple because he didn’t think Jane was interested in Bingley. He also says that Wickham tried to marry Darcy’s then-15-year-old sister to get his hands on her money after he lost his inheritance. Having learned about these things about Darcy, Elizabeth starts to see him in a new way.
Soon after, Lydia Bennet, the youngest Bennet sister, runs away with Wickham. Elizabeth is very alarmed by the news, because the scandalous affair, which isn’t likely to end in marriage, could hurt the other Bennet sisters’ reputations, which would be very bad for them. Then, when she tells Darcy, he makes Wickham marry Lydia by giving him money. Elizabeth tried to keep his actions from Elizabeth secret, but she found out about them anyway. At the encouragement of Darcy, Bingley subsequently returns, and he and Jane become engaged. Finally, Darcy asks Elizabeth to marry him again, and this time she agrees.
